A great drummer demonstrates impeccable timekeeping, rhythm and coordination, an understanding of drum patterns and fills, and mastery of essential techniques.
Unlike some other teachers I have always taught students to play the right way. Focus on performing being able to keep time, play any styles. Not gimmicks . Which are not necessary or useful, and whose only purpose is to attract attention or publicity. It might make one feel cool to. Wear stylish shades. Wearing a Baseball Cap
Twirling the drumsticks , not an essential skill ! Iam not saying that
having fun is not important. A certain amount showmanship goes with the job. But not if one cannot keep time! This is the job of a drummer. Timekeeping!
I have always encouraged students to join a group/band or play in one of my percussion ensemble. Developing your skills. Adapt your skills and prepare for the changing requirements /challenges .
